Diabetes is a chronic metabolic condition that occurs when the body is unable to properly regulate blood glucose (blood sugar) levels. This happens either because the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or because the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces.
Insulin is a hormone that helps glucose enter cells to be used for energy. When insulin function is impaired, glucose remains in the bloodstream, leading to elevated blood sugar levels over time.
There are three main types of diabetes:
✔ Type 1 Diabetes – An autoimmune condition where the body does not produce insulin.
✔ Type 2 Diabetes – The most common form, where the body becomes resistant to insulin or does not produce enough.
✔ Gestational Diabetes – A temporary condition that develops during pregnancy.
If left unmanaged, diabetes can lead to serious complications affecting the heart, kidneys, nerves, and eyes. Early detection, regular monitoring, and lifestyle management are essential for long-term health.
